5 Tips for a tiny home that is comfortable and functional!

                              Are Tiny Homes Functional?

Hey there! So you've decided you wanted to downsize in a BIG way?! Well, when it comes to downsizing just try to remember that you will have to put an end to any attachments that you may have with your material possessions. You will be getting rid of A LOT...and even after that you will get rid of more.
The best motto to live by when buying a tiny home and deciding what to put in it is the famous quote "Less is More" and don't you forget it! Tiny homes can absolutely be functional and comfortable, but just know that it comes with a lot of research and a lot of mistakes in the beginning. Don't worry though, you'll get the hang of it. A piece of advice, ALWAYS read the reviews.!

Here are 5 tips I've put together to make things a little easier for you!

  1. Tiny homes mean tiny appliances, but the most common mistake when purchasing a small appliance is probably impulsing control! You will see something cute and tiny and just imagine how adorable it will look in your home and run to the checkout line! However, even with tiny appliances, the same rule applies when it comes to quality. Just because it's smaller doesn't necessarily mean you should get a bargain deal. Look up reviews of the product online (review maintenance options incase something breaks & warranties) When shopping for appliances ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS carry a tape measurer with you and store the measurements of the space you're trying to fill in your notes! Another thing to note is make sure you understand the ins and outs of your home (where is the electricity hooked up, where is the waterline, and for driers make sure there is a place for a vent if you need one) For our tiny home we had to add on lean-to to the exterior of our home, run a water & electric line and cut a hole into our wall just to add a washer and drier in the perfect spot where it was out of the way!
  2. DO NOT BUY-IN BULK! Trust me keeping things a lot neater and having the extra space for the things you need is a lot less stressful. You will just have to accept that you'll be going out to the market a lot more frequently! Having a small home will make you a lot more mindful about the things you purchase.
  3. Have a multi-purpose everything! Having a chair, sofa, bench and coffee table with storage is a definite must every time! As a couple with a photo and video company, you can bet we have a ton of wires and equipment! You better believe we have a special place for everything, and you'd never know it by walking in!
  4.  Really consider adapting to the in one and out one rule when it comes to anything new that you bring into your home. I like to call it " The Minimalist Mindset." If you frequent retail or clothing stores, highly consider that you will have a much smaller closet and make absolutely sure anything you purchase sparks joy or add value to your lifestyle. When you get home replace that new shirt with one you haven't worn in a while and donate it! Seems simple enough? You'll never have to worry about a closet door that you can't close and it keeps things fun and current!
  5. Keeping things tidy! This seems obvious but I think everyone has a little bit of slack from time to time. We are all human after all and we are busy! In a tiny home however, you will notice EVERY LITTLE THING. If one thing is on the floor and 2 dishes are in the sink, one towel is on the bathroom floor...Honey your house is a WRECK. Picking up after myself and washing the dishes every time I use them has become a habit in my home. A clean home is a happy home, and it makes it a much more comfortable place for everyone!

Applying a minimal mindset can be difficult at first, but try to keep in mind this is the idea that sparked interest in the first place! Having a small home has been such a blessing in my life, it has taught me a lot about saving money and also investing it into products that I can heavily rely on to make my life easier!
I hope that these 5 tips can help you, whether you have just started your tiny living journey or it's something you are interested in doing! Take care, my tiny dwellers!
